World Finger Jousting Championships
at World Alternative Games 2014
Announcement

Llanwrtyd Wells, Wales, UK, 28 July 2014 - Competitors invited to take part in official World Finger Jousting Championships in Llanwrtyd Wells.

On Sunday, August 10th competitors will square-off to compete in the World Finger Jousting Federation’s international championship in Britain’s smallest town, Llanwrtyd Wells in Wales. The tournament will be hosted by the 2014 World Alternative Games.

Finger jousting is a sport where two consenting players square off in an attempt to prod their opponent with their lancing (right) index finger before the opposing player can. The competitors must keep their right hands locked in an arm wrestling fashion and not use their legs or latent (left) arm in an offensive manner. The competitors are known as jousters, and the act of touching the other person’s body with the index finger is known as lancing.

Entry to the World Finger Jousting Championships cost £4 per person and players can enter and pay on the day or secure a place by registering to compete in advance via the World Alternative Games website at https://endurancecui.active.com/event-reg/select-race?e=8431751.

The World Alternative Games in Llanwrtyd Wells were created in 2012 as an alternative to the “other big event” taking place in the United Kingdom that year. In 2014 the World Alternative Games will hold their over 60 interesting sports, games, and events between Friday, August 8th and Monday, August 25th.

The finger jousting competition will be split into two categories--Male and Female--and competitors will play in a single elimination knockout format tournament with consolation finals. The matches will be played to six points over three one-minute rounds of finger jousting action.

“After a successful championship in 2012, I am thoroughly excited for this year’s finger jousting championship to once again showcase the athleticism and good nature of competitors from around the world,” said Julian Gluck, President of the World Finger Jousting Federation and a native of LaGrange, Georgia, United States of America. “This event will be even more impressive than the last, and I expect some epic triumphs and valiant participation.”

Karen Perkins, Secretary of the World Alternative Games, said, “Following the success of the involvement of the World Finger Jousting Federation at our first ever World Alternative Games in 2012, we are very excited about welcoming back Mr. Richard Gottfried and his team for a further competition which has already generated a lot of interest in the UK and yet again from much further afield. This is an event that attracts a diverse age range, from the youngsters as demonstrated at one our partner organisations at their event in St. Clears on the 21st June, to the very competitive adults who will again be striving for the coveted gold medal. Of course it is all about the taking part and not the winning that we promote, and every entrant will get our Corinthian medal for coming along and having a go at this fantastic sport."

Dame Julia Galvin, a sportsperson of much renown in alternative sports events, competed in the 2012 finger jousting contest and said, “Finger Jousting! Harder than it looks but what fun. I like to think of myself as a novelty sport aficionada, and I can guarantee that finger jousting hits several sporting standards, novel or not. It's competitive and muscle toning, requires tenacity and a strategic mindset and a sense of honour whilst self-declaring a touch from the opposition.”

The 2012 WFJF event at the first edition of the World Alternative Games saw athletes from five countries compete. Philip “Mr. Big” Large from Coventry, England won the Men’s Championship, while Danitsja “Dani Banana” Kallendorf from the Netherlands won the Women’s title.

Other events taking place on August 10th include Worm Charming, a Food Fayre, Space Hopper Race, World of Grip, Egg Throwing, Porta Putt, Hide N Seek and a number of different cycling disciplines (including a Penny Farther Race). The events are scheduled so players are able to compete in multiple events.
